Todd DAVID Maurer, foundING PARTNER
Todd Maurer is Founding Partner at 3/1 Global Research, a strategy and corporate advisory firm specializing in emerging markets, with a particular focus on Asia. For over two decades he has brought analytical research, investment banking and M&A expertise to corporations, start-ups, governments, and private investors worldwide.
Maurer was previously Vice President of Corporate Development, China and North Asia, for Apollo Global, a joint venture education investment company formed in 2007 by Apollo Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: APOL) and Carlyle Group, with operations in 14 countries. Prior to this he was a Partner at Lotus Asset Management Limited, a Hong Kong-based hedge fund and alternative investment firm, which focused exclusively on the Asia-Pacific and India through both public and private market investments. He has also held senior corporate finance and equity research positions within Peregrine Investments Holdings Limited based in Hong Kong, Seoul and Beijing. At Peregrine he worked on a number of landmark privatizations, global offerings and financial restructurings involving both state-owned enterprises and private sector firms, while also representing some of the world’s leading multinationals on acquisitions in China and Asia. He commenced his career as a trade economist with KOTRA, a Korean government agency, where he developed US-Korea economic and trade research.
In the field of education and related technology, Maurer has advised numerous multinational, growth and early-stage companies across the student and investment cycle. He was previously Board Member of The STEM Academy, a non-profit organization that provides STEM literacy to middle and high school students, and is currently a Member of the Pacific Council on International Policy, an affiliate of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Mr. Maurer earned a B.A. in Economics from U.C.L.A, an M.I.A from Columbia University, and has conducted post-graduate study at Peking University and Nanking University, China. He speaks and reads Mandarin Chinese, and conversational Korean and Russian.
CHristopher nyren, PARTNER
Christopher is a partner at 3/1 Global Research. He is also the founder of Educated Ventures, an education industry advisory and seed investment firm that has successfully raised and invested nearly $50 million across a dozen separate client capital raises and direct investments since its founding at the end of 2011. Christopher has also founded Educelerate, a not-for-profit network to foster start-up ventures focused on education technology and innovation. They have held monthly events involving a membership base of over 1,000 Educelerants in Chicago, Twin Cities, Los Angeles and Phoenix.
Prior to founding Educated Ventures, Christopher served as an independent advisor to the global media and publishing company Bertelsmann on their entry into the global education market. Christopher spent the prior four years helping to build the Corporate Development & Global Strategy team for Apollo Group, the owner of the University of Phoenix and largest for-profit educational company in the world. During this time, he was involved in the creation of Apollo Global, a $1 billion joint venture private equity fund with the Carlyle Group. Over his career at Apollo, Mr. Nyren was the primary corporate development professional on every acquisition and investment completed by the company and the fund (totaling four domestic and international deals and over $750 million of aggregate consideration). This experience included his leadership of Apollo’s European Corporate Development efforts which culminated in the $600 million acquisition of the UK post-secondary education company BPP Holdings plc.
Christopher has also worked in private equity, including the education and services focused investors LLR Partners where he completed an investment in a vocational post-secondary education company. He started his career with the education and services coverage team at investment bank Credit Suisse. Mr. Nyren graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa from Lake Forest College and received his MBA from the Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania.
jason schrott, senior advisor
Jason is a Senior Advisor at 3/1 Global Research. He is currently Managing Director of Berlitz Corporation (China) where he manages and develops business opportunities for the Berlitz Corporation and its subsidiaries including Berlitz Training Solutions (“BTS”), ELS Educational Services, Inc.; TMC, Versation, Berlitz Cultural Consulting, Berlitz Franchising Corporation and products including GTEC, CyberTeachers, and the Berlitz Virtual Language Center. Berlitz is a subsidiary of publicly-listed Benesse Corporation, one of the world’s largest education holding companies. Jason is widely recognized for his leadership in international education and passionate desire to cultivate the next generation of global leaders.
Jason was previously Vice President of University Partnership Development for a leading international educational pathway provider. He has also held senior recruitment, marketing, business development and executive roles with Grand Canyon University (LOPE), Apollo Education Group (APOL) and Apollo Global, Inc.
Prior to his work in global education, Jason worked on Wall Street, established and managed a Sino-US joint venture company based in China, and led Sea-Land Service, Inc.’s (Maersk Line) North China and Mongolia business units where he interfaced with multinational consumer products companies, energy firms and government agencies. Throughout his career he has worked for private, publically traded and private-equity backed firms.
Jason has lived in and worked with Asia for 20 years. He holds degrees from Washington University in St. Louis and Thunderbird School of Global Management, and has undertaken studies at Middlebury College, Beijing Normal University, Czech Management Institute and the Moscow Institute of Economics, Politics and Law. He is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.
